Alameda County stands at the center of California’s housing challenges. With 52% of residents living in rental housing—far higher than the national average of 34%—the role of small and independent rental property owners has never been more critical. These are essential workers who make up the fabric of our local rental housing system, providing the majority of rental units across the county. An important service that is often ignored in today’s polarized housing conversations.
Rising insurance premiums, escalating fees, maintenance costs, and general inflation are squeezing owners from every angle. At the same time, new and often complex housing policies continue to reshape the landscape, leaving many small housing providers scrambling to stay compliant. In this environment, rental owners cannot afford to go it alone.
That’s why EBRHA’s 360 Housing Trade Expo on Saturday, September 27th, is more than just another event—it’s a vital place for the people who keep Alameda County housed. It provides valuable insights into industry trends and rental housing laws. A space for housing providers to be heard, share their experiences, voice their concerns, and connect with peers who face the same challenges. Panel discussions and presentations give owners the knowledge and tools they need to adapt, stay compliant, and hopefully grow the rental community.
In short, this event will help owners become better rental housing providers.
At the Alameda County Housing Provider Resource Center (ACHPRC), we recognize that housing in the Bay Area is an ecosystem. Renters, rental property owners, policymakers, and service providers all play interdependent roles in creating the delicate balance that defines our communities. But we also recognize a growing narrative that paints all rental property owners as corporate landlords. The truth is far different. The majority of housing in Alameda County is provided by small, independent owners—our neighbors—who are doing their best to keep properties safe, habitable, and affordable under tremendous strain.
That’s why gatherings like the 360 Housing Trade Expo matter. They are a chance for rental property owners to plug in, learn, share, and strengthen their collective voice. They’re a reminder that while housing policy can often feel top-down, real solutions are built when those providing housing are empowered, informed, and included.
If you are a rental property owner in Alameda County, now is the time to show up. Stay up to date on the policies that affect you, connect with available resources through ACHPRC and EBRHA, and add your perspective to the conversation. The stability and growth of our housing system—and the affordability of homes across the county—depends on it.
